Media Comings and Goings

There have been some interesting staff changes recently at the Tribune.

Two reporters — David Baez and Lindsay Christians — were shitcanned last month for different reasons. Baez lasted about a month, easily a record at a newspaper that historically turns over reporters rapidly.

On the flip side, the Trib hired former KCBX stalwart Diane Urbani for a features writing position. There was a time in the late '80s and early '90s when Diane was literally the voice of KCBX. She eventually left town to pursue a graduate degree in journalism, but now is back and applying her degree. Looks like the Trib will also snatch at least one reporter away from another local paper. Details to follow.

Meanwhile, Scott Taylor will shortly be off the morning news on KVEC to focus on his new afternoon show on Cat Country 96.1. Clear Channel is looking to replace Taylor in the morning. Announcement forthcoming.

Tongues are also wagging over the hot rumor that the big "O," as in Oprah, is expected in San Luis Obispo later in October for a return visit. Nah, she's not hungry again. If Oprah comes, it will be to present an award at a local medical society function.

Also, check out Al Franken, in person, doing a booksigning at Borders on November 2nd at 7 p.m. Supposedly Big Al is also going to do a live broadcast of his Air America show from Cal Poly earlier that day.

Why do you have to pry into people's private lives, eh? Ever cared about someone other than yourself for once or whether people will get shitcanned for the stuff you put here? Fun to embarass people? Must be since you should be embarrassed by your own show. Just shows what a small insecure person you are.

Well, I have a longstanding policy of not responding to people who hide behind Anonymous, which to me is synonymous with Chickenshit.

But the facts in my posting are accurate and I am merely living up to the mandates of my blog -- report on what is happening in the local media scene: good, bad and ugly.

I feel the same way about a person hiding behind the "anonymous" label. However, when it comes to taking note of who's in/out at various media enterprises...

...these reporters are public figures who have their name printed with each story they write. Which puts them into the public spotlight as much as any source.

Since these intrepid writers work on behalf of the reader (the public), they know what they write will have a high level of scrutiny. And they learn on the job(s) all about the "world" of newspapers/radio/tv/blogs.

Besides, no one has been fired for what a media reporter wrote on a blog page.

Gee, Dave, that happened more than a month ago. Behind the times a little?

Hey Dave, it's interesting what you say about "people who hide behind anonymous." I tend to agree with you on that point.

But aren't you being hypocritical since you frequently allow the anonymous "Conservative Bob" to guest host your radio program as well as have him on as a frequent in-studio guest? The stuff he says is certainly distasteful and offensive to many people, and yet you allow him to continually hide behind his pseudonym and apparently refuse to reveal his true identity on air.

In fact you proclaimed on air that it was you who originally encouraged "Conservative Bob" to hide his real identity. So what gives? If you find "anonymous" comments on this board problematic ("chickenshit" in your words), why do you encourage your radio show guest host to do the same thing?

I look forward to seeing you once again try to debate your way out of an obvious inconsistency in attitude.
